Luca Guadagnino Expresses Interest in Directing My Best Friends Wedding Sequel

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Luca Guadagnino has shown interest in directing a sequel to My Best Friends Wedding. Julia Roberts, the star of the original film, confirmed in an interview with Variety that Guadagnino is willing to reunite with her after their collaboration on After the Hunt.
When Roberts mentioned she was in talks to return for the sequel, Guadagnino asked, “Will you let me [direct it]…?” to which Roberts replied, “Very soon.”
Celine Song, director of Past Lives and Materialists, is writing the screenplay, though the project is expected to be helmed by another filmmaker.
In the original film, Roberts played Julianne, a food critic who realizes she is in love with her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney). When she discovers Michael is about to marry his new girlfriend Kimberly (Cameron Diaz), Julianne sets out to sabotage the wedding at any cost. The film grossed nearly $300 million worldwide and earned three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Guadagnino recently wrapped filming on Artificial, starring Andrew Garfield, and has several projects in development, including Lord of the Flies, Separate Rooms, a remake of American Psycho, and Buddenbrooks.
